Individuals and bands in the independent music scene have lots of challenges in order to establish their brands of music to listeners, at least in their own local community. That is why, although D.I.Y. is clearly the abbreviation of “do-it-yourself”, the D.I.Y. ethics make more sense when people in the independent music scene practices “do-it-together.” Surely the purist would agree. Let’s face it, nobody expects anybody to do everything by themselves. They need to support each other and not to bring down certain individuals, bands or even genres in the scene for that matter. It is the joy of seeing other succeeds and at the same time, themselves, that unite certain groups together and make them even stronger.
Forget about the mainstream media and major labels. If according to their business calculation you’re not sellable, then to them, you’re useless. The whole “Support our local music industry” slogan screeched by the mainstream media and major labels is actually questionable. So, who are the people that independent music artists can rely on? The answer is simple, the people in the independent music scene themselves; friends, peers, fellow artists and more friends and peers altogether. Internet is the perfect distribution platform where bands can distribute their music fast and get opinions for that matter. Not only that can promote feelings of confidence in their music but also a chance to better themselves with suggestions and tips given by other listeners and fellow musicians. So it is only smart for bands to start introducing themselves to the right group of people, who understand the challenges of a D.I.Y artist, and most importantly supports the growing independent music scene.
