Why Youtube? Youtube has been the platform for many artists, bands, celebrities to showcase their talent (or in some cases, themselves) to the world. Among those millions uploading their videos are people from our turf; Malaysians. Young and hot Malaysian individuals and even bands uploading their videos hoping for a rise to fame. Now there is a new genre cultivating amongst us in the streets. The rise of the “Independent” music scene, more known as the “Indie” scene. Many would not know that these Indie musicians have been around for a long time, Malaysians are now turning into a new leaf. Say goodbye to pop culture and mainstream music, Independent music is here to take the lead. Now here’s a question to music lovers. How do we find the music from that new band that you heard from the radio the other day? Before this, the answer would always be, “Youtube lah!” But now, there’s another place to turn to; Gundu.my lah!.
Local bands can now upload their music to Gundu.my and gain popularity and be the “talk of the town” in a jiffy without waiting to be played on mainstream radio to be known. Here in the indie scene, we are all here to help a brother/sister in need and to lend a helping hand. Not convinced enough? Let’s put it into a bigger picture. Up on Youtube, though having a wider range of users/listeners/viewers you also have a wider range of competition. You will have to compete with all the other millions of people uploading their music up on Youtube waiting to be discovered just like you. So chances of you getting discovered might be lower than if you upload your things up on Gundu.my. Yes, a narrower range of audience and competition which would likely multiply your chances of being heard!
Lets learn from our ancestors, “Sikit-sikit, lama-lama menjadi bukit.” (Start small, eventually it will lead to something big.) So to all you music-making machines, start small. Go local. Not only will your voice be heard, you’d also be helping us in Gundu make our name so we both can be in a win-win situation! Local music has never grown so much before in such a vast pace, so lets spread it even faster! Support local bands, support local sites. Together, we’ll conquer. Malaysia Boleh!
